CLASS DESCRPTIONS

 

Introduction to Gold Leaf Gilding  (1 Day)
10 am to 5 pm

 

Spend the day learning gilding on wood, glass, and metal through hands-on work, demonstrations and experimentation. Try your hand at a variety of different ways of working with gold and metal leaf for art, frames, furniture, and architectural elements with traditional water, mordant (oil and other adhesives) and glass gilding.

 

An excellent opportunity to explore and develop practical skills and knowledge to incorporate gold leaf into your artistic repertoire. 

 

By the end of the day you will have a finished picture frame to take home along with something to put in it!

 

Handouts and a supplier list will be provided. 

 

Class Fee:  The class fee is $US 125.00 and includes materials and use of all gilding tools.

 

Limited to 8 students • No experience needed 

 

 

Water Gilding Frames (1 Day) 
10 am to 5 pm

 

An introduction to the methods of water gilding considered the ultimate in the gilders art. We will use modern formulations for traditional materials laying of genuine 22k gold leaf and silver leaf and the techniques of burnishing, and toning. 

 

By the end of the day you will have a finished picture frame to take home as well as sample boards.

 

Handouts and a supplier list will be provided.

 

Class Fee:  The class fee is $US 110.00 and plus a $US40 materials fee, use of all gilding tools.

 

Class size is limited to 8 students  • Pre-requisite Introduction to Gold Leaf Gilding or instructor permission

 

 

Mordant Gilding for Metal & Wood (1 Day)
10 am to 5 pm

 

Mordant gilding is the application of a variety of adhesives to adhere gold leaf. This is the most commonly used technique for gilding with real and imitation gold and metal leaf. 

 

You will be guided through the oil gilding process for applying gold, silver, and other metal leaves to frames, furniture, and decorative objects.  You will be  provided an unfinished picture frame to gild with real 22 k gold leaf to take home.

 

Class Fee:  The class fee is $US 110.00 plus a $US40 materials fee. Includes the use of all gilding tools gold leaf and supplies.

About the instructor:
 

John Perkins worked as museum conservator of furniture and decorative arts for the National Historic Parks Service in Canada and the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles. He has been gilding for 20 years. For the last 3 years he has been leading the gilding work at the great Stupa of Dharmakaya in Colorado - one of the world's great monuments.
